What Grade Do I Need on the Final Exam?
Use current grade, target grade, and final exam weight to find the score needed on a final.
Open Final Grade CalculatorThe Final Exam Question Is an Algebra Problem
If you know your current grade, your target grade, and the final exam's weight, you can calculate the exact score needed on the final. The formula separates the grade you have already earned from the grade that is still available through the final exam.
The Formula
Required final score = (target grade - current grade x current grade weight) divided by final exam weight.
If the final is worth 25%, your current grade is worth 75%. A current grade of 88 contributes 66 points toward the final course grade because 88 x 0.75 = 66.
Example
Suppose you have an 88%, want a 90%, and the final exam is worth 25%. You need 24 more points from the final because 90 - 66 = 24. Divide 24 by 0.25 and the required final exam score is 96%.
How to Interpret Results
- Below 0%: your target is already protected.
- 0% to 100%: your target is mathematically possible.
- Over 100%: your target requires extra credit, grading changes, or a lower target.
Reality check
If the required score is 103%, the target is not realistic unless extra credit exists. If the required score is 62%, the target is possible, but you still need to consider how difficult the exam is and whether your current grade is up to date.
Use Scenarios, Not One Number
The Final Grade Calculator is most useful when you compare several outcomes. Try the score you need for a B, B+, A-, and A. That gives you a practical range before you decide how to study or whether to ask about missing work.
